๐ Welcome back for the last track on Deebak EP!
Premiere BALA ALLAYEL Tuesday, September 20, at 1PM NYC / 8PM Damascus time.
The original “Bala Allayel” was inspired by Um Kulthum
Usually I co-produce with Haquin and other producers who do all or most of the technical work, but if you look back in my SoundCloud profile, you’ll find some tracks that I produced myself. “Bala Allayel” is one of them. Eight years ago, I created this track with a sample from Um Kulthum’s “Aqbal Al-Layl”:
Here’s the song where the sample came from. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Um Kulthum, yes, this one song is 42 minutes long! (Look up some of her performance videos on YouTube. There’s a reason she is considered one of the biggest legends in Arab music.)
The “Special Version” comes together
On the day that my friend Mike O’Hehir and I recorded Deebak, we spent all day trading ideas and experimenting together. Mike played me a chord progression he had been playing with on guitar, and I started singing “Aqbal allayl, bala allayel, bala allayel,” which became the chorus.
When I tried adding the rap verses from my original version of Bala Allayel, I was a little worried at first by how fast they came out. If you listen to the original track (above) you’ll notice it was a pretty slow delivery. I always try to make sure But as we tried it over and over again, I realized I loved the dynamic transition between the slow, melodic chorus and the fast verses – it showed how far my skills have developed in eight years, and seemed to fit with the gypsy-style folk vibe.
Performing “Bala Allayel” in Portland
The first time I performed “Bala Allayel” was one of the most magical on-stage experiences ever. At about 4AM during one of Mike’s full moon parties, a bunch of us ended up singing the song around the kitchen table. Mike and Amir grabbed their guitars, everyone found harmonies and sang along. Amir blew us all away (as usual) with this incredible Spanish-style guitar solo.
I was scheduled to open for their band, Coyote Island, and I just knew we had to relive that kitchen table moment on stage. Here we are opening the album release show with it at Portland House of Music:
