Being a Syrian in exile can feel like a nightmare you can’t wake up from, like walking through the world as a ghost – invisible and cut off from humanity, or inadvertently haunting those around you who can’t understand your pain.
“Ghost of Sham” was written and shot in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with Finnish collaborators Smö and Marleena Arianna while Assasi waited in limbo for a US residence visa. Trump’s catastrophic “Muslim Ban” came down in the midst of this process.
Spare, creepy production by Haquin and Baxtak (Shivelight/Outtallectuals) with cello by Adam Maalouf evokes a horror soundtrack.
